Philadelphia is stepping up its game in senior safety with a new initiative by the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA). In a bid to bolster security for the city's older residents, PCA has teamed up with Amazon Devices to distribute 1,000 Ring cameras. This initiative, driven by PCA's dedication to aging in place, aims to transform how seniors live securely at home.
Patricia Clark, one of the first recipients, shared her enthusiasm at a recent press conference held at the Firehouse Active Adult Center. "I received the doorbell Ring, and I really do like it," said Clark, highlighting the ease and peace of mind it brings. "Because I can see what's going on before I even get to the door." This sentiment echoes PCA President and CEO Dr. Najja R. Orr's vision of keeping seniors in their homes safely for as long as possible.
The initiative has garnered significant support from city officials, including Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker. "You are expanding what it means to care for seniors in a modern and forward way," she said, acknowledging the innovative approach. The devices offer live views, night vision, and a two-way talk feature, ensuring continuous connectivity and safety.
“It gives me peace of mind,” Clark said at a recent press conference.
To qualify, participants must be at least 60 years old, reside in Philadelphia, and have the necessary tech setup: Wi-Fi, a smartphone, and an email address. Remarkably, all this comes at no cost to the seniors, including a free lifetime subscription for each device.
Raquel Medrano, Community Engagement Manager for Amazon Devices, emphasized the mission behind Ring. "Ring's mission is to make neighborhoods safer," she noted, highlighting how these cameras can help seniors feel more secure, even when they're not at home. The program intends to distribute 500 doorbells and 500 cameras, enhancing community safety one device at a time.
As the PCA continues its mission to improve the lives of older adults and those with disabilities in Philadelphia, this initiative marks a significant step forward in creating safer, more connected homes for seniors.
