Reliving Childhood Magic: The Rise of Adult Summer Camps

Remember those sun-drenched days of youth, filled with bonfires, sticky s’mores, and the forging of friendships that felt like they’d last a lifetime? For many, summer camp conjures up idyllic memories of a simpler time. Now, imagine recapturing that very essence, but with the added benefit of adult perspective and perhaps a touch more sophistication. Adult ‘sleepaway’ camps, a concept that’s been gaining traction in the United States for some time, are now making a significant splash in Europe, tapping into a growing desire for authentic human connection and a nostalgic escape from our increasingly digital lives.

The appeal of these grown-up getaways lies in their ability to cater to a burgeoning trend: travelling solo, yet surrounded by strangers who quickly become companions. In an era where social interactions are often mediated through screens, there’s a palpable yearning to connect with people face-to-face, to experience shared activities, and to build genuine friendships organically.

Why the Boom in Adult Summer Camps?

Global group tour operator EF Ultimate Break is at the forefront of this movement, launching a week-long summer camp experience in the majestic Swiss Alps this summer. This offering is specifically designed to resonate with Gen Z and Millennials, demographics that EF Ultimate Break identifies as actively “chasing nostalgia everywhere.”

“There are a lot of challenges in the world right now, and we are seeing a real yearning among people in their 20s and 30s to return to some of the simplicity of childhood,” explains Alyssa Sands, Director of Tour Development at EF Ultimate Break. “Summer camp is such a quintessential part of growing up, and the idea of revisiting that feeling as an adult, having activities planned for you, being outdoors, forming friendships without having to force it, is really resonating.”

Making Friends IRL: A Powerful Draw

The success of these adult camps isn’t just theoretical. Last summer, content creator Allison Wolf shared a captivating reel detailing her “dreamy and magical” experience at Camp Château, an exclusive women’s-only camp located in the picturesque south of France. The response was overwhelming; just five days after her post, the camp was officially sold out for 2025, with an astonishing 11,000 individuals on the waiting list.

Philippa Girling, CEO and co-founder of Camp Château, articulated the camp’s core philosophy: “We created Camp Château with the idea that you can arrive and not work on yourself. You can just relax, curate your experience, do whatever brings you joy and tranquillity and some restorative time.”

What Awaits at an Adult Summer Camp?

EF’s Swiss Alps camp aims to meticulously recreate the classic summer camp experience, but with a decidedly more refined edge. Expect crisp mountain air, the opportunity to learn new sports, and the cultivation of those effortless friendships that characterised childhood summers. Instead of basic tents, participants will be accommodated in stylish ski chalets, and locally produced wine will likely replace the traditional sugary quenchers.

The week-long August program is strategically divided between two breathtaking locations: two nights will be spent in the serene lakeside city of Lausanne, followed by four nights in the charming mountain town of Engelberg. The itinerary is packed with engaging activities designed to immerse campers in the natural beauty of the Alps. These include:

Kayaking on pristine Alpine lakes.
Ziplining exhilaratingly through lush forests.
Embarking on scenic hikes to discover traditional mountain cheese farms.
Gathering around crackling bonfires for s’mores under a canopy of stars.

Meanwhile, CampJoli offers a diverse range of activities to nurture both body and soul. Guests can partake in:

Invigorating morning yoga sessions.
Peaceful, meditative walks through the countryside.
Hands-on bread-making workshops.
Foraging expeditions to discover local flora.
Lively dancing nights to celebrate community.

Camp Château also provides a selection of “electives” – participation is entirely optional, removing any pressure. These optional activities include:

Creative print-making sessions.
Fun and informative mixology classes.
Exhilarating horse riding adventures.
Relaxing movie nights under the stars.

While these adult camps share some similarities with wellness retreats, Sands points out a crucial distinction. “The core of a camp is really about active, hands-on experiences,” she clarifies. “Hiking, swimming, workshops, ropes courses, trying things you have never done before. A retreat tends to be more inward-facing. Camp is about being outside, being active, and doing things together as a group.”

These carefully curated experiences offer a potent blend of nostalgia and present-day connection. However, for those eager to recapture these cherished childhood moments, it’s worth noting that these adult summer camp experiences come with a price tag considerably higher than their youthful counterparts. Camp Château’s early bird bookings for 2027 start at €2,520 per person for a five-night stay, while EF’s Camp Ultimate is priced from $2,999 (approximately €2,590) for six nights. It’s important to remember that these figures typically exclude flights, making it a significant investment in reliving those halcyon days.
