Age Verification Laws: A Growing Concern For Sex Educators

Sex Educators Under Siege by Age Verification Laws

"Oh, so you want kids to look at pornography?" It's the tired, hyperbolic comeback often faced by those opposing age verification mandates for online adult content. Critics argue it's not about promoting access to explicit material for minors but ensuring adults can freely access and create constitutionally protected content without privacy infringements. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers echoed this sentiment when he recently vetoed a proposed age verification law.

Yet, the ripple effects of these laws stretch beyond traditional concerns, potentially jeopardizing more than just access to adult content. As regulations aimed at shielding minors from "harmful content" expand, they may inadvertently target sex educators, sexual health organizations, and advocates from various communities, including LGBTQ+ rights supporters.

Survey Reveals Widespread Impact

In the face of these sweeping mandates, the Woodhull Freedom Foundation launched a survey in March, reaching out to sex educators and sexual health professionals to assess the impact. Although preliminary and based on 56 respondents, the findings are telling. Nearly 18% of these educators, and a third of those in states enforcing such laws, reported experiencing significant disruptions in their work.

“If you let them ban porn, they will call you pornographic when they ban you,” a Bluesky user insightfully commented, highlighting the slippery slope these regulations present.

Concerned about the trajectory of these mandates, a majority of sex educators (76%) and more than half of health professionals (53%) expressed apprehensions about future implications. The Woodhull Foundation aims to broaden the survey soon, hoping to gain a clearer picture of how these laws affect different demographics and practices.

Governor's Bold Move and Broader Implications

Governor Evers’ veto of Wisconsin's age verification bill (A.B. 105) stood out amidst a wave of similar legislative efforts across the nation. Emphasizing the precarious balance between protecting children and safeguarding adult privacy and free expression, Evers highlighted potential risks such as the misuse of sensitive data for blackmail or identity theft.

This unfolding drama coincides with an unusual case in Fairhope, Alaska, where protestor Renea Gamble faces multiple charges after donning an inflatable penis costume in a demonstration against former President Trump. Her trial, set for April 15, underscores broader debates around the First Amendment and personal freedoms.

As states intensify regulations, the conversation around privacy, free speech, and adult content continues to evolve. Many await further insights and developments from ongoing investigations and legislative decisions.
