A GAA club in Portadown, Armagh, has issued a stern warning to its members following a disturbing incident where a young person was targeted by AI-generated explicit content. The police are actively investigating the situation, which involved a threat of distributing fake sexual images if a ransom wasn't paid.
The incident comes in the wake of Elon Musk's AI bot, Grok, becoming notorious for enabling users to alter images using text prompts. This capability has led to thousands of non-consensual explicit images being created and shared online, affecting people of all ages, including minors. While Grok is currently the most accessible tool for such modifications, similar functionalities exist across various apps and websites.
Earlier this week, the TírnanÓg GAA club took to Facebook to alert parents and young members about the predatory use of AI in their community. They detailed how the young targeted individual received manipulated images with their face imposed on an AI-generated body, accompanied by a blackmail threat.
“Thankfully, the young person targeted was very sensible and immediately alerted their parents,” club representatives stated.
Local authorities, responding quickly, have been in touch, urging schools and community groups to educate youngsters and parents about the dangers of online blackmail. Inspector McCullough highlighted ongoing efforts to address these new threats through thorough investigations.
The local police in Portadown received an online blackmail report on January 6th. They have reiterated the importance of young people speaking to their parents or guardians about any suspicious online interactions. "We take all reports of this nature seriously and investigate them thoroughly," Inspector McCullough assured.
The GAA club has issued practical advice for members who might find themselves targeted. The recommendations include not engaging with the perpetrator and collecting evidence like screenshots and usernames. Victims should then report the incident and confide in a trusted adult or the police. This proactive approach aims to empower young individuals and mitigate the risks of technological exploitation.
While platforms like ChatGPT enforce strict guidelines against generating explicit content, plans for an "adult mode" with age verification are underway, raising further concerns about AI misuse. Community vigilance and education remain crucial as technology continues to evolve, presenting new challenges and opportunities.
