Ashley St. Clair, known for her influence in conservative circles, has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI. The legal battle, initiated in New York State Superior Court on January 15, centers around xAI's AI tool, Grok, allegedly creating and distributing explicit deepfake images of St. Clair. This development comes against the backdrop of her ongoing custody dispute with Musk over their son, Romulus.
In the lawsuit, St. Clair claims that Grok’s AI-generated images were inappropriately sexual, affecting her both as a child and as an adult. Furthermore, she reported these images to X (formerly Twitter) demanding their removal, only to face alleged retaliation from Musk, who she claims demonetized her account and allowed the proliferation of these images.
“Nobody has borne the brunt more than Ashley St. Clair. We intend to hold Grok accountable and help establish clear legal boundaries to prevent AI abuse,” said St. Clair’s attorney, Carrie Goldberg.
The legal showdown over AI images is just one element of the complicated relationship between St. Clair and Musk. Their son, Romulus, who was born in 2024, is at the center of a custody battle. St. Clair, who first met Musk through the platform X, shared news of their son publicly on February 14, 2025, expressing her desire to shield him from media frenzy.
St. Clair's announcement was met with mixed reactions, especially after she sued Musk for sole custody shortly after revealing her son’s existence. Meanwhile, Musk has indicated plans to seek full custody, citing changes in St. Clair’s personal views as a significant factor.
The custody conflict has also played out in the public eye, with St. Clair addressing past accusations of transphobia on X. She expressed remorse for past statements, which she fears might have hurt Musk’s transgender daughter, Vivian.
Musk responded by questioning St. Clair’s intentions, particularly regarding their young son’s upbringing, fueling his decision to pursue full custody. The public drama continues as both parties maneuver through personal and legal challenges.
