Australia's Age-Verification Law Shakes Up Internet Usage

Australia's bold move to enforce age-verification for adult content is already causing ripples across the digital landscape. As of March 9, the country mandates websites distributing pornography to verify that users are over 18, a decision that aligns with similar laws in the UK, France, and several US states. This new rule also requires app stores to conduct age checks before allowing downloads of 18+ software.

VPNs in High Demand

In the wake of these restrictions, VPNs have become the go-to tool for Aussies navigating the web. Data from March 9 reveals that three out of the top 15 free smartphone apps on Apple's download charts were VPNs, with VPN-Super Unlimited Proxy leading the pack. VPNs are popular for their ability to mask users' locations, which could circumvent age-verification processes.

“This just really brings... those protections that we put for kids in place to the digital realm,” shared eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, emphasizing the importance of such measures.

Content Providers React

Major adult content providers like Aylo, which owns sites such as RedTube and YouPorn, are adapting by blocking Australian users or offering a censored version of their platforms. Pornhub, for instance, now presents a "safe-for-work" version for its Australian audience, while Aylo's platforms display a notification that they are "not currently accepting new account registrations in your region."

This wave of age-restriction laws has sparked debates about privacy and digital rights. Critics argue that such measures may drive users to access illegal platforms, creating potential privacy risks. Aylo's spokesperson conveyed concerns that these laws "do not effectively protect minors and instead create harms relating to data privacy and exposure to illegal content on non-compliant platforms."
