Awolokun's Call to Action

Nigerian author Oluyemi Awolokun is making waves with his latest book, "Dancing Too Early: Lyrics, Children, and the African Media Wave." This thought-provoking work was unveiled at a recent Book Reading & Signing event at Rovingheights Book Store, Landmark Event Centre, Oniru. Awolokun aims to spotlight a crucial issue – the protection of children from adult-rated content.

During the event on Sunday, Awolokun explained that the book was born out of a perceived cultural shift. He argues that the increasing exposure of children to mature content, especially through music and films, poses a significant risk. "The idea behind the book is, we see that there is a cultural shift between what we know as adults or as Africans, and what we have today," Awolokun stated. "Children are exposed to a lot of adult-rated content, which is not safe for them psychologically; it has its effects."

Collective Responsibility

Awolokun's book dives into the roles that various societal stakeholders play in regulating children's exposure to such content. He urges the government, parents, teachers, and faith leaders to act collectively to safeguard children's development. He elaborates, "This is because we believe that the entire child development in a country is not just on the parents, it’s also on faith leaders, teachers, and the government."

“Think about this. You have a child, and you take the child to a playground, and you get there, and they’re playing adult-rated songs. How do you explain to your child what that sound means?” Awolokun emphasized the need for designated child-friendly zones.

Voices of Support

Lead Pastor at Rainbow Charismatic Centre, Sunday Balogun, who penned the foreword, expressed his enthusiasm for the book's potential impact. "If there is any project right now that I am very proud to be identified with and in any way to be part of, it is this book," Balogun shared. He believes it will spark a much-needed cultural shift.

The event, moderated by journalist Alao Abiodun, was a gathering of literary enthusiasts, media professionals, and supporters, offering a platform for engaging dialogue. It wrapped up with prayers, interactive Q&A sessions, and audience contributions. Awolokun's message is clear: to let children be children and shield them from adult influences that could hasten their maturity.
