The horror genre is in for a treat as Blumhouse snags the highly coveted rights to adapt the popular comic series Something is Killing the Children. Originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the successful production company emerged victorious in a competitive bidding war for Boom! Studios' renowned series, penned by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Werther Dell'Edera. This exciting development comes hot on the heels of Netflix's acquisition of another horror comic, Black Hole.
First published in 2019, the series follows the adventures of Erica Slaughter, a lone warrior determined to save a town haunted by monstrous child-eaters. With her trusty stuffed octopus as her only companion, Erica’s journey has captivated readers through its dark narrative and complex character development. Over time, the series has expanded its universe, exploring secret organizations and delving into Erica's transformation into the formidable hero she is today.
Fans have long awaited Erica Slaughter's leap from page to screen. Previously, Netflix had recruited horror specialist Mike Flanagan to helm a series adaptation, but plans fell through due to creative differences. The project was then assigned to Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, yet the series stagnated. Now, with Blumhouse at the helm, there’s renewed hope for both a live-action film and an animated series, with Tynion himself slated to oversee the latter.
“It’s easy to see why audiences and critics alike have praised Something is Killing the Children,” said Jason Blum, expressing his enthusiasm for the project. “James and Werther’s comic book series taps into our most primal fears, luring us into a fascinating world and introducing Erica Slaughter, the ass-kicking hero we all wish we had to fight the monsters that lurk in the dark.”
With Blumhouse's live-action and animated adaptations on the horizon, horror fans have plenty to look forward to. As excitement builds, fans can also explore other upcoming horror releases to satisfy their cravings till Erica Slaughter and her monsters make their big-screen debut.
