Cleveland Browns rookie Harold Fannin Jr. is making a splash before even stepping onto the field for his debut against the Cincinnati Bengals. The young player, who initially donned the No. 88 jersey during summer practices, has now decided to cut that number in half, turning heads by choosing No. 44 as his official rookie number.
Interestingly, this change isn't entirely out of the blue for Fannin. He wore No. 0 during his final college season and sported No. 44 prior to that. Now, he plans to channel the legacy of the legendary Leroy Kelly, who wore the same number for the Browns from 1964 to 1973.
“Having No. 44 gives me a connection to the greats who came before me, and I want to honor that tradition,” Fannin said, reflecting on his decision.
The Browns snagged Fannin in the third round from Bowling Green State University (BGSU), where he made a name for himself in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). He set records as a tight end with 117 receptions, 1,555 yards, and 10 touchdowns in his final season – a remarkable feat in FBS history.
While he's not expected to take the lead role immediately, as David Njoku currently holds the top tight end position, Fannin's potential impact on the Browns' evolving offense is eagerly anticipated. The team looks forward to seeing how he fits into their plans as they continue their search for a future quarterback.
There's speculation on whether Fannin will stick with No. 44 long-term, but for now, he seems determined to make it a part of his identity. Despite not being the typical chains-moving number, it's a sharp choice and one that Fannin is ready to embrace.
Stay tuned to see how Fannin's rookie season unfolds and if his jersey number becomes as memorable as his college stats suggest.
