Cam Ward’s path to the NFL wasn’t paved with gold but rather marked by perseverance and a drive to succeed. Despite being the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, Ward’s journey began humbly with just a single college offer. That offer brought him to the University of Incarnate Word (UIW), an FCS school where he could hone his skills and build a foundation for his future in football.
Ward made the most of his time at UIW, where he was welcomed by his coach, Eric Morris. Morris saw the potential in Ward, who posted impressive stats with 6,908 yards and 71 touchdowns over two seasons. This performance set the stage for his transfer to the Washington State Cougars, where he further developed his game before catching the eye of the NFL’s Miami Hurricanes.
Eric Morris, Ward’s former coach, saw something special in the young quarterback. Watching Ward warm up, Morris was reminded of another gridiron great, Patrick Mahomes, known for his dazzling plays and three Super Bowl wins.
“I walked down and Cam’s taking a little three-step drop as he warms up and the ball is just spinning out there like none other,” Morris reflected. “The pop that he had, the rotation that he had it was something, when you see a talent like that, and I had been around Patrick Mahomes for the previous three or four years, so it’s not like I didn’t know it when I saw it.”
Ward’s potential was evident to Morris and others who witnessed his skills during practice, prompting questions about his under-the-radar journey to that point.
Now with the Tennessee Titans, Ward is navigating the ups and downs of his rookie season. The team has struggled, securing just one victory so far, and Ward’s stats stand at 246 completions from 412 attempts, totaling 2,351 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions.
While the start may not be as stellar as anticipated, Ward’s talent and the high expectations stemming from his earlier comparisons to Mahomes suggest that his best performances are yet to come.
