Nottingham Carer Jailed for Exploiting Veteran Client

In a shocking breach of trust, 32-year-old care worker Ash Morningstar from Nottingham has been sentenced to 16 months in prison. He was found guilty of embezzling over £30,000 from a blind and bed-bound former soldier, a crime that spanned a 10-month period.

The court heard that Morningstar transferred funds from the elderly man's bank account to his own and splurged on luxuries like jewelry, airsoft gear, and subscriptions to OnlyFans. The case was tried at Nottingham Crown Court, where Recorder Balraj Bhatia KC condemned Morningstar's actions as "wicked and dishonest."

Betrayal of Trust and a Lifestyle Funded by Fraud

The victim, a former serviceman in his late 70s, was reported to be registered blind and spent most of his time bed-bound. Morningstar, employed by Ardent Care in 2022, was initially seen as a friend by the victim, who even expressed intentions to leave him money in his will, according to prosecutor Mark Knowles.

“You made a decision over a period of 10 months to defraud the victim of just shy of £33,000, and that money was spent on goods for yourself, your partner, and holidays,” said Recorder Bhatia KC.

The court was told Morningstar had set up online banking for the veteran but had not been authorized to transfer or withdraw funds. A detailed spreadsheet revealed nearly £33,000 was misappropriated through various transactions, including luxury goods and fast food.

A Guilty Plea and Mitigating Circumstances

Morningstar, who had no prior convictions, pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position. His defense, led by Julia King, highlighted that he had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and expressed remorse. Letters submitted from Morningstar's family and partner portrayed him as a caring father expecting a child.

The victim's social worker shared that the ordeal left him "angry and distrustful of authority," affecting him deeply in his final days. His last wish was for any remaining funds to be donated to animal charities. The social worker testified to the psychological impact on the victim, who had no family and was frail at the time of his death.
