Chloe Cherry, who plays the character Faye on HBO's hit series Euphoria, is speaking out about the show’s latest storyline that’s turning heads. Season three has plunged deeper into edgy territory with Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie, resorting to OnlyFans to fund her wedding. Critics have been vocal about how the show portrays sex work, and Cherry isn't holding back her thoughts.
The new season, set five years after the last, features scenes that some say push boundaries too far – from Cassie engaging in 'puppy play' to other eyebrow-raising moments. “For me, it just feels crazy as f**k to see somebody like Cassie turn to sex work. Like... Holy s**t, that's where we’re at in society?!” Cherry remarked, highlighting the storylines' reflection of economic pressures rather than empowerment.
“OnlyFans and sex work has become more normalized, but it's literally only because of capitalism and the economy getting worse. It has nothing to do with empowerment or power,” Cherry commented to Refinery29.
Cherry sheds light on a growing trend she sees as driven by financial desperation. She explains that while OnlyFans offers a safer alternative to traditional sex work, the dive into such platforms is more about survival in a troubled economy. “The economy is horrible, that's why people are turning to it,” she stated, noting the allure of working from home.
This surge in OnlyFans' popularity has sparked conversation. Despite some creators finding autonomy, Cherry sees it primarily as a sign of the times. With the cost of living rising and job scarcity, she argues people are turning to OnlyFans out of necessity rather than choice.
Reflecting on her transition from adult entertainment to mainstream acting, Cherry offers a candid warning to those considering a similar path. In her chat with Out Magazine, she shared, “Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, I would not recommend a singular person on this Earth get into the adult industry in an attempt to do something that is movies or TV or anything that's not in the adult industry.”
Cherry stresses that entering the adult industry should be a choice for its own sake, not as a stepping stone to Hollywood. “If you're OK with being seen as a porn star for the rest of your life, that is the only reason that you should enter the adult entertainment industry... never to do other things,” she added, emphasizing the lasting labels that come with such decisions.
