In a troubling case out of Colleton County, South Carolina, a Cottageville man has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses related to child sexual abuse material. The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office has identified the man as 65-year-old John Mark Padgett. He is facing six counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, a serious charge that underscores the gravity of the allegations against him.
The investigation into Padgett's activities began when a cyber tip was received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This alert set off a chain of events that led authorities to Padgett, where they discovered files containing child sexual abuse content. The tip was crucial in focusing the investigative resources of the Internet Crimes Against Children task force on this case.
“The swift action of the task force highlights the importance of vigilance in protecting children from exploitation,” commented a representative from the Attorney General's Office.
Following the discovery, Colleton County deputies, alongside the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon, executed the arrest on Thursday. Each of the six charges against Padgett carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment, reflecting the severity with which the legal system treats these offenses. The case remains open as investigators continue to piece together the extent of the crimes.
