In a significant move to bolster platform safety, Discord is set to implement AI-powered age verification globally. Starting in early March, all users will find themselves under "teen-by-default" settings. This latest update is designed to shield younger users by limiting their exposure to sensitive content and unsolicited contact from strangers unless the account is verified as belonging to an adult.
To access age-restricted channels, users will now need to prove their age as adults. Discord's new verification methods include facial estimation using a video selfie, which is processed directly on the device. Additionally, users can opt to upload official identification to third-party partners, ensuring quick deletion after verification. An AI inference model will also discreetly assess whether an account belongs to an adult based on user behavior on the platform.
Following successful trials in the UK and Australia, Discord's rollout will automatically enforce stricter privacy settings globally. Among the changes, messages from unknown users will be routed to a separate inbox, while alerts will flag suspicious friend requests. Only verified adults will have the option to disable these restrictions for a more open experience.
“We’re committed to balancing safety with privacy, making sure age status remains hidden from other users,” stated a Discord representative.
Moreover, a new 'Teen Council' composed of young users aged 13 to 17 will advise Discord on safety features and product policies, ensuring the platform is in tune with the needs of its younger audience. Applications for the council are open until May 1, 2026.
Previously, users could create Discord accounts by simply entering a birthdate to self-verify their age. This system, however, was easily bypassed by younger users, leaving them vulnerable. The new verification process aims to bridge this gap by reinforcing protections for minors while confirming adult users' ages.
These changes are part of Discord's ongoing efforts to create a safer and more secure environment for all users, especially the younger demographic, as they navigate the platform's vibrant virtual space.
