Singapore – Discord Inc. is reshaping the landscape for teen safety online with its latest announcement: the global rollout of 'teen by default' settings. These updates are designed to provide enhanced protections for users aged 13 and up, while still preserving the platform's focus on privacy and community.
Starting in early March, both new and existing users will automatically experience these teen-appropriate settings. This includes upgraded communication safeguards, restricted access to age-gated areas, and improved content filtering. Some users may need to verify their age before changing specific settings or viewing sensitive content.
Savannah Badalich, head of Product Policy at Discord, emphasized the importance of these changes: "Nowhere is our safety work more important than when it comes to teen users, which is why we are announcing these updates in time for Safer Internet Day. Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord’s existing safety architecture, giving teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility."
“We design our products with teen safety principles at the core and will continue working with safety experts, policymakers, and Discord users to support meaningful, long-term wellbeing for teens on the platform.” – Savannah Badalich
Discord's updated age assurance system offers users the choice between facial age estimation, processed directly on their device, or submitting identification through trusted partners, with all documents deleted shortly after use. Additionally, an age inference model works in the background to minimize repeated verifications.
The new default settings ensure that only age-verified adults can interact with sensitive content, access age-restricted channels, and adjust privacy settings. Direct messages from strangers will be automatically filtered, and users will see alerts for unfamiliar friend requests.
Following successful tests in the UK and Australia, Discord is now expanding these settings globally. The company is also in the process of establishing its first Teen Council, an advisory group of 10–12 members aged 13–17. This council will offer direct insights on features, policies, and educational materials, ensuring that teen perspectives shape the platform's future. Interested applicants can apply until May 1, 2026.
With these initiatives, Discord underscores its dedication to a privacy-forward, age-appropriate digital environment, backed by tools like the Ignore feature, Family Center, Teen Safety Assist, and more.
