Shifting Perceptions: Disney+ Embraces Adult Viewers

Once seen primarily as a haven for children’s content, Disney+ is reshaping its identity by catering to a broader audience. The addition of general entertainment offerings from Hulu has gradually shifted perceptions. At the Enders Conference, Karl Holmes, responsible for Disney+'s operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, highlighted intriguing data from the UK’s rating agency, Barb. According to the agency, 40% of Disney+ viewing hours are now accounted for by the 16-34 age group, outpacing competitors like Netflix, Prime Video, and Paramount+.

“Disney+ now appeals to adults as much as kids. But it’s important to stress that our grown-up audience is emphatically young," Holmes stated, emphasizing the platform's connection with younger adults.

Investing in Adult-Centric Content

Disney+ isn't just talking the talk – it's investing heavily in content that resonates with adults. From “The Kardashians” to “Shogun” and the British series “Rivals,” where Holmes noted its second season is “already bigger than the first,” Disney+ is expanding its repertoire. The focus is not just on the U.S. market; Disney+ has its sights set on international audiences, especially in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Holmes underscored this strategy, saying, “Disney+ customers will start to see a greater frequency of shows from their home market. We are increasing the number of local Originals.” This move aims to keep subscribers engaged with a mix of global hits and local favorites.

Beyond Mickey Mouse: A Broadened Appeal

For years, Disney has worked to break the stigma that Disney+ is only about animated classics. With marketing campaigns targeting the 16-34 demographic, Disney+ is leveraging key franchises and brands like ESPN and Hulu to broaden its appeal. Yet, despite its foothold among preschoolers, the platform contends with challenges in capturing the attention of older kids and teens more inclined toward social media content.

Disney+ has recognized the critical need for a varied content slate, something Walt Disney cautioned about long ago. Reflecting on the need for increased local content, Holmes noted that various countries are pushing for laws requiring international streamers to invest more locally, a situation Disney+ is navigating amid shifting audience preferences.

As Disney+ continues its quest to balance content for all ages, it faces the test of maintaining momentum with both legacy hits and fresh, captivating originals. Join the conversation online – is Disney+ hitting the mark for you?
