Elle Fanning has turned heads with her surprising decision to join OnlyFans, a move she says was crucial for her role in the upcoming series Margo's Got Money Troubles. Speaking at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on Thursday, March 12, the 27-year-old actress elaborated on how the platform helped her get into character. "Obviously, I am an Instagram user and a TikTok user," she shared, "but we had to dive into OnlyFans a little bit. We did create an account for the writer's room, and for me, so I could check out how the website is."
Based on Rufi Thorpe's bestselling 2024 novel, the Apple TV series follows Margo, portrayed by Fanning, as she navigates financial struggles after becoming a mother and leaving college. In a bid to stay afloat, Margo turns to the adult website, prompting Fanning to explore OnlyFans in-depth. This exploration was a collective effort with the show's writers, as explained by showrunner Eva Anderson during a panel discussion. "There was a lot of looking at OnlyFans with the writers, but we all gave consent to each other before we did it," she stated. "We were very responsible and just tried to get as much information as we could before we started."
“I hope people really enjoy the show. It’s a family drama, but there’s also, again, it’s very heartwarming and Margo is such a hopeful character," Fanning expressed.
The series boasts a star-studded cast, featuring big names like Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Marcia Gay Harden, and Nick Offerman. Elle Fanning, known for her role in We Bought a Zoo, shared her excitement about working with such an accomplished team, revealing last December that her time on set was "the most wonderful experience". With its blend of family drama and heartwarming moments, Fanning hopes the series resonates with audiences everywhere, emphasizing that her character Margo is both inspiring and relatable.
