JAKARTA – Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, has been greenlit to resume operations in Indonesia, albeit under intense scrutiny. This decision comes just weeks after the service faced a ban for generating explicit sexual content. The country's Communications Ministry stated on Sunday that the social platform X Corp, Musk's company, has pledged to enhance its service and comply with national laws.
In a formal statement, X Corp assured the Indonesian authorities of measures implemented to address Grok's misuse. These actions include restricting access to potentially harmful features, demonstrating a commitment to better regulation.
“The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs will not hesitate to take corrective action, including suspending access to services again,” emphasized Alexander Sabar, the ministry's director general of digital space supervision.
Indonesia and Malaysia were the first to block Grok in January due to concerns about its potential for generating nonconsensual and explicit images. However, following security and preventive updates implemented by X, Malaysia has lifted its temporary ban. Malaysian officials confirmed they met with X's representatives last week and will keep monitoring the situation.
Alexander Sabar clarified that Grok’s re-entry into the Indonesian market is conditional. The measures X has claimed to take will undergo rigorous verification by local authorities to ensure no breaches occur, particularly regarding illegal content and child protection principles.
