Nicola Wheeler, the actress behind Emmerdale's beloved character Nicola King, has opened up about how her current storyline has affected her approach as a parent. On the popular ITV soap, Nicola and her on-screen husband Jimmy King, played by Nick Miles, are navigating the challenges posed by their adopted son Carl, portrayed by Charlie Munro Joyce. Recent plot twists have shown Carl in legal trouble due to sharing inappropriate images of Clemmie Reed, played by Mabel Addison, with classmates.
In a candid conversation on This Morning, Wheeler revealed her surprise at the legal implications of a child sharing such images. "When I was talking to the producer about this storyline, I had no idea that a child sending those kind of images was actually committing a crime," she admitted. Her character's turmoil has prompted her to reconsider the digital habits of her own 10-year-old son. Determined to delay giving him a mobile phone, Wheeler emphasized the importance of monitoring children's online activities.
"We have a responsibility as parents to just check in with our kids. Or maybe just not give them phones in the first place," she stated.
Reflecting on her journey with Emmerdale, Wheeler fondly recalled her first day on set back in 2001. She shared memories of performing alongside Kate McGregor, who played Emily Kirk, reminiscing about her long-standing role in the iconic series. As she looked back at her inaugural scene, Wheeler’s contribution to the Yorkshire Dales drama was celebrated, marking a remarkable two-decade tenure.
Emmerdale continues to captivate audiences, airing weeknights on ITV1. Meanwhile, fans can catch This Morning on ITV1 weekdays from 10am.
