Christian Watkinson, a 48-year-old former science teacher from The Christian School in Takeley, Essex, has been banned from teaching following a scandal involving inappropriate content displayed in class. The incident which led to his dismissal unfolded in November 2022, when a shocking image of a woman in underwear appeared on his classroom's big screen, causing immediate concern among students and staff.
According to a report by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), Watkinson admitted to using his school-issued laptop to access adult chat sites and sexually suggestive content while supervising students. He was caught during a science lesson when, in an attempt to present educational material, he inadvertently revealed a tab with inappropriate imagery to his pupils.
Despite acknowledging the incident and apologizing at the time, Watkinson's troubles didn't end there. On May 17, 2023, a student reported seeing more inappropriate content on his school laptop, sparking a thorough investigation by the school. Screenshots from Watkinson's Gmail account, accessed from his laptop, showed multiple alerts from adult chat sites.
“His conduct was exceptionally reckless,” noted the TRA panel, citing his deliberate bypassing of the school's internet filters to access restricted sites.
The panel highlighted Watkinson's deliberate actions to circumvent the school's monitoring systems by using a hotspot connection, leading to further exposure of inappropriate content during lessons. The TRA's findings concluded that his actions were not only reckless but displayed a significant disregard for E-Safety policies and safeguarding principles.
Ultimately, the panel ruled that Watkinson's conduct amounted to serious misconduct. His teaching license was revoked indefinitely, barring him from teaching in any educational setting in England. While he may request the lifting of the ban, this will not be possible before August 30, 2035.
The Christian School in Takeley, where Watkinson was employed, has since closed, going into liquidation in July 2024. The school had a 'Good' rating from Ofsted back in 2020, but its closure marks an end to its chapter, overshadowed by this scandal.
