Time to Binge: Fifty Shades Trilogy Leaving Netflix

The sizzling Fifty Shades trilogy is waving goodbye to Netflix's streaming library next month. Love it or hate it, this R-rated franchise has pulled in an impressive $1.32 billion worldwide, largely thanks to its strategic Valentine’s Day releases.

Stream Before They’re Gone

Mark your calendars – Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed will no longer be available for streaming on Netflix starting Monday, June 1, 2026. Based on E. L. James’ best-selling books, the series first hit the big screens under the direction of Sam Taylor-Johnson and continued with sequels directed by James Foley. Screenwriters Kelly Marcel and Niall Leonard brought the steamy story to life.

“Despite mixed reviews, fans can't get enough of Ana and Christian's complex romance,” said a film industry expert.

The trilogy follows the tumultuous relationship between literature student Anastasia "Ana" Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, and the enigmatic businessman Christian Grey, portrayed by Jamie Dornan. Their journey begins with Fifty Shades of Grey, where Grey's BDSM lifestyle sets the tone for a gripping story.

From Romance to Drama

In Fifty Shades Darker, Ana and Christian test the waters of their relationship under new terms, while Christian deals with past demons. Fifty Shades Freed culminates their saga as they face external challenges trying to disrupt their newfound life together.

Despite the films' lukewarm critical reception, they captured audiences worldwide. The first film scored a mere 25% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes but fared better with audiences at 41%. While Fifty Shades Darker received a dismal 11% critic score, viewers rated it 47%. The final chapter, Fifty Shades Freed, echoed similar emotions, earning an 11% critic score and a 38% audience score.

Box Office Triumph Over Criticism

Commercially, the Fifty Shades saga proves reviews aren’t everything. With a budget of just $40 million, the initial film nearly hit the $570 million mark globally. The sequels, each made for $55 million, also crossed the $370 million threshold, showing the series' undeniable appeal.

Catch them on Netflix while you can – the Fifty Shades trilogy's departure is sure to make waves among its devoted fan base.
