The incident occurred around 9:20 AM on Friday, when a tram veered off the tracks near Staghorn Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, slamming into a light pole. The pole became lodged into one of the carriages, creating a dramatic scene.

Fortunately, the tram was devoid of passengers at the time of the accident. The driver was promptly taken to the hospital as a precautionary step, ensuring their safety and well-being. As a result of the derailment, Surfers Paradise Boulevard has been closed southbound between Ocean Avenue and Palm Avenue, for an indefinite period.

Tram services in both directions are suspended from Southport South to Broadbeach South, with replacement bus services being organized to manage the commuter chaos. The exact timeline for clearing the area remains uncertain, leaving regular tram-goers in a state of limbo.

Earlier, around 7:40 AM, emergency teams were dispatched to Surfers Paradise Boulevard when a tram passenger suffered a medical episode. The individual was in a life-threatening condition and was swiftly transported to Gold Coast University Hospital for urgent care.

Authorities, including Queensland Ambulance and the police, are urging motorists to either steer clear of the area or brace themselves for prolonged delays. In response, police have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the sequence of events leading to the derailment.
