Government Takes Bold Action Against Online Gambling Promotions

Starting this Sunday, October 19, the government will enforce a sweeping block on any website, news portal, mobile app, or online media outlet found promoting or advertising gambling, betting, or pornography. This decisive move will be made without issuing any prior notice, signaling the government's robust stance on curbing digital content that violates national laws.

The government’s actions follow growing concerns over the spread of gambling and adult content across various digital platforms. Authorities have repeatedly highlighted violations of the Cyber Security Act of 2025 and the Pornography Control Act of 2012, which categorize these activities as punishable offenses. Despite numerous warnings issued by the government through press releases and official notices, some platforms have continued to flout these regulations by displaying promotional content related to online gambling and adult content.

Platforms Respond to Government's Tough Stance

In a proactive response, several news portals have already adjusted their Google AdSense policies in line with the government's guidance. The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology has expressed gratitude to these organizations for their swift compliance and cooperation. This collaboration illustrates a shared commitment to maintaining a safe and ethical cyberspace.

“Ensuring a safe, ethical, and youth-friendly cyberspace remains a top priority for the Ministry,” stated Muhammad Jashim Uddin, Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.

To ensure the effectiveness of these measures, multiple government agencies, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), National Security Intelligence (NSI), and Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), are collaborating closely. These agencies are working in unison to monitor and address any violations of digital content regulations.

Ensuring a Safe Digital Environment

The government has reiterated its commitment to creating a youth-friendly digital environment, emphasizing the need for stringent actions against breaches of legislation. In a statement issued on Saturday, Muhammad Jashim Uddin confirmed the steps being taken. He stressed the importance of maintaining ethical standards across digital platforms to protect users, particularly the younger audience, from harmful content.

As these measures take effect, observers will be watching closely to see how digital content providers adapt to these new regulations and whether the government’s actions will effectively reduce the prevalence of online gambling and adult content.
