Over its more than 20-year history, Adult Swim has carved out a unique niche in the world of animated comedy. From cult classics like Home Movies and Space Ghost Coast To Coast to breakout successes such as Rick and Morty, the late-night block has been the birthplace of many unforgettable series. Recently, fans had to bid adieu to another gem – Smiling Friends, which wrapped its quirky three-season journey this past weekend. The final episodes, titled “Friend Bot” and “Charlie’s Uncle Dies and Doesn’t Come Back,” premiered on April 12th on Adult Swim, and are now available for streaming on HBO Max.
Created by Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, Smiling Friends quickly carved out its own place among Adult Swim's modern classics. Launched in 2020, the series follows the whimsical adventures of cynical Charlie and his upbeat partner Pim as they tackle bizarre challenges at a company dedicated to spreading joy. With a stellar 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show became a favorite for its wild mix of absurd comedy, touching sincerity, and critiques of contemporary life, all brought to life through its innovative mixed-media animation style.
“We didn’t want to overstay our welcome,” shared Cusack and Hadel, explaining their decision to end the show after three successful seasons.
The arrival of Smiling Friends' final episodes is just part of a content-packed April for HBO Max. The platform has been expanding its lineup with an impressive array of films and shows. This month, subscribers can enjoy the complete Alien franchise, the thrilling conclusion to the Maze Runner series, beloved classics like The Devil Wears Prada and Twister, and the final season of Hacks. Looking ahead, even more exciting titles like Dust Bunny and A24’s Marty Supreme are set to debut later this month, ensuring there's something for everyone.
With the sun setting on Smiling Friends, HBO Max continues to shine with fresh offerings, making sure viewers always have something new to discover.
