Fans of LGBTQIA+ TV were in for a treat with the recent release of the first two episodes of Heated Rivalry, a gay romance series set against the backdrop of professional hockey. This adaptation of Rachel Reid’s popular novel transports audiences into the lives of elite hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, whose intense rivalry on the ice conceals a secret romantic relationship.
The show’s synopsis captures the essence of this narrative: a secret teenage fling blossoms into a complex love story that spans eight years. As these athletes chase success on the ice, they simultaneously navigate their forbidden romance. It's a tale of love, denial, and self-discovery, where they must balance their competitive sports world with their personal affections.
Since its debut, Heated Rivalry has mesmerized viewers worldwide, lauded for its gripping writing, direction, and, notably, the electric chemistry between stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie. Among the show’s highlights are steamy scenes that have taken social media by storm.
In a candid Q&A at the world premiere, Storrie expressed that neither he nor Williams felt uneasy about their intimate scenes. “I don’t think Hudson or I are particularly squeamish about that,” he remarked, emphasizing their comfort on set. Williams echoed his co-star, noting their collaborative and boundary-free approach to filming under the guidance of showrunner Jacob Tierney and an intimacy coordinator. Storrie added, “From the jump, we were like ‘you can do whatever you want to me, however you want to me.’”
“The show doesn’t feature any gratuitous sex scenes. We’re learning about these men. [You can’t have these scenes] without that specificity,” Tierney explained.
This isn’t the first time Williams and Storrie have opened up about their dynamic on set. During an interview with Out, Storrie reminisced about their chemistry reads, sharing how Williams stood out among potential co-stars. “Hudson was the third actor that I read with... and then Hudson came on. I was like, ‘Yeah, Hudson for sure. Instantly,’” he revealed.
Williams also had fond memories from their initial meeting, though his reaction was more candidly intense. He confessed there was an “inexplicable X-factor” when he read with Storrie, noting it felt far more real than he anticipated. Tierney humorously recalled Williams saying, “The other guy was good, but Connor felt like he was going to pin me down and fuck me.” Such chemistry has undoubtedly contributed to the series’ success and viral appeal.
Heated Rivalry airs every Friday on Crave in Canada and on HBO in the U.S., with its finale set for December 26. Unfortunately, UK fans are still waiting for a release date announcement.
