Gone are the days when online platforms relied on easily faked birthdates for age checks. With enhanced age verification technologies rolling out, a new challenge has emerged – tech-savvy users turning to VPNs to dodge these checks. The age-old methods of entering any date of birth are being replaced by more advanced systems, but users seem to be adapting swiftly.
Cybernews reports that online discussions, particularly on Reddit, are buzzing with ways to circumvent age verification. Conversations about bypassing these systems surged from just one Reddit post in May 2025 to 65 by April 2026, culminating in 241 discussions over a year. Two significant events marked the biggest spikes in these bypass talks and subsequent VPN downloads.
Firstly, when the UK's Online Safety Act was enacted on July 25, 2025, Reddit saw a 460% surge in bypass comments, with VPN downloads in the UK hitting 2 million that August alone. The trend continued, with over 1 million downloads per month in the following months.
The second surge came in March 2026 as Australia imposed age checks for accessing adult content. That month, Reddit bypass discussions increased by 47% and VPN downloads almost tripled to 871,000. Interestingly, a previous social media ban for the under-16s in Australia on December 10, 2025, did not have the same impact on VPN activity, highlighting that adult content restrictions, rather than social media bans, are the main drivers behind these VPN spikes.
Aras Nazarovas, a senior security researcher at Cybernews, emphasizes that it’s not just minors who are fueling the VPN surge. Many adults, wary of privacy invasions requiring government ID or facial scans, prefer using VPNs instead of complying with these measures.
“As long as these methods remain so privacy-invasive while bypass techniques remain widely accessible, these laws are unlikely to achieve their intended effect,” Nazarovas remarked.
The ongoing tug-of-war between privacy and protection continues, highlighting the complex landscape of digital age verification.
