OnlyFans' Secret Sauce: No Middle Management

In a candid revelation at the Web Summit in Lisbon, OnlyFans CEO Keily Blair shared the unconventional strategy driving the platform's success: eliminating middle management. By keeping its organizational structure lean, OnlyFans has managed to remain highly efficient while serving a massive global audience.

Founded in 2016, OnlyFans is known for its subscription-based model and a significant adult creator base. Despite its extensive reach, the company operates with just 42 full-time employees. Blair, speaking with Jeff Berman from Masters of Scale, highlighted the surprise many express upon learning that the platform generates approximately USD 7 billion in annual revenue with such a small team. She attributes this to a flat hierarchy and a focused hiring approach.

A Dynamic Team Culture

Blair explained that OnlyFans seeks "incredibly senior talent" alongside "hungry junior talent," focusing on mindset and capability rather than years of experience. She emphasized that removing what she describes as the "squidgy layer" of middle management keeps the company agile. "Nobody’s ever had a really good middle manager in my experience," she noted, underscoring the importance of their streamlined approach.

"Even a 'team of one' can deliver impactful results," Blair highlighted, underscoring a culture where individual contributions are key.

Streamlined for Success

Rather than judging employees by the size of their teams, OnlyFans evaluates individuals based on their personal contributions. This "team of one" mindset allows employees to maximize their impact without the traditional constraints of corporate hierarchies.

Since taking the helm as CEO in 2023, Blair, with her background in law, has guided the platform to serve around 400 million users and host about 4 million creators globally. She pointed out that OnlyFans' structure is reflective of a broader trend among tech giants, who have similarly reduced middle-management to enhance efficiency.

This innovative approach has not only propelled OnlyFans to remarkable financial success but also positioned it as a leader in modern organizational strategies.
