Son of Prominent Pastor Faces Jail Time

Jonathan Peternel, the 24-year-old son of a well-known Indiana pastor, has been sentenced to six years in prison after a guilty plea to charges involving child sexual abuse material. His case caught public attention due to his father's standing as lead pastor at Life Church, which maintains a close relationship with the state's political figures, including the lieutenant governor.

In January, Peternel admitted to one felony count of child exploitation and three counts of possessing child sex abuse content. "I hate my sin that I’ve committed," he expressed remorsefully in court. "I want to apologize to anybody who has fallen victim to my behavior." Originally, Peternel had pleaded not guilty, but he changed his plea as the case progressed.

Church Ties and Public Reaction

The case is significant not only due to the charges but also because of the involvement of Peternel's father, Nathan Peternel, who leads Life Church with campuses across Indiana. Nathan, who previously took a leave of absence after his son's arrest, has been a mentor to Republican Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, who serves as a pastor at one of the church's branches. The two have co-hosted a podcast, "Jesus, Sex & Politics," which has now gone silent following the scandal.

“You have a strong personality and a lot of family support … rely on them and you can do good,” Judge Dudley advised Peternel during sentencing.

Lt. Gov. Beckwith has remained tight-lipped about the case, choosing not to comment publicly. Judge Mark Dudley, who oversaw the sentencing, emphasized accountability in his ruling, handing Peternel a total of six years, with all charges running concurrently. Peternel will also be required to serve probation and register as a sex offender after his release.

Details Unfolding from the Investigation

The investigation into Peternel began when a tip was received by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Authorities searched the Peternel residence, uncovering extensive incriminating material, including explicit images and photos on Peternel's phone involving his own parents. The case also uncovered disturbing online activities linked to a Snapchat group called "Diddy Disciples," alluding to music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, who himself faced legal issues in 2025.

In front of the court, Peternel issued a heartfelt apology to his family and community for the distress and shame his actions caused. He vowed to fight against the "wickedness" he was involved in, turning to faith and rehabilitation as his guides. Judge Dudley acknowledged Peternel’s family support and encouraged him to use his time in correction for positive change.
