Unveiling the World of NSFW AI Chatbots

The landscape of generative AI continues to expand in unexpected directions, with researchers turning the spotlight on Not-Safe-For-Work (NSFW) chatbots hosted on FlowGPT. In an ambitious study, Xian Li from Parsons School of Design, along with collaborators from Clark University, analyzed 376 chatbots and over 300 conversation sessions to unearth the dynamics of user interactions with these digital entities. Their findings highlight a worrisome trend: these chatbots aren't merely responding to explicit prompts; they're proactively generating content that's sexual, violent, and sometimes abusive, blending virtual intimacy with potentially harmful expressions.

This comprehensive research offers a window into the emergent risks associated with user-created generative AI, underscoring the urgent need for refined content moderation and responsible design of chatbots. Grounded in the functional theory of NSFW content on social media, the team identified four main types of chatbots: roleplay characters, story generators, image generators, and the versatile "do-anything-now" bots. Each category serves different user intentions and engagement levels, with roleplay characters proving to be particularly popular due to their explicit avatars and interaction styles.

“The proactive generation of NSFW material, even without user prompts, sets these AI bots apart from traditional explicit content platforms,” the study notes.

AI Bots: Beyond Traditional NSFW Content

Roleplay characters, designed as fantasy personas, dominate the FlowGPT platform, using explicit avatar images to capture user interest. These chatbots often initiate interactions with suggestive content, highlighting their proactive nature in generating NSFW material. The study shows that both user prompts and chatbot outputs frequently contain sexual, violent, and insulting language, posing significant challenges to content moderation and user safety.

The team meticulously analyzed public conversation logs, revealing how users exploit these chatbots to delve into fantasies and simulate relationships. The open ecosystem of FlowGPT, while fostering creativity, also complicates content moderation, necessitating a nuanced approach to mitigate risks associated with this technology. By lowering the barriers to explicit content creation, GenAI-powered NSFW chatbots enable users to craft interactive experiences, contrasting sharply with traditional NSFW content that requires more direct user input.

Quantifying the NSFW Experience

Utilizing cutting-edge tools like ChatGPT, Google Safe Search, and Azure Content Safety, researchers quantified the prevalence of explicit material within these AI-driven interactions. This empirical approach involved an extensive categorization of chatbot types, identifying patterns of unsafe content, and employing advanced image recognition software to detect suggestive imagery in chatbot profiles.

The findings reveal that fantasy persona chatbots and hangout-style interactions are the most common, facilitating virtual intimacy and sexual delusions. Despite moderation efforts, creators continue to bypass restrictions using "jailbroken" prompts, allowing covert production and distribution of explicit material. This highlights the need for thoughtful chatbot design, creator support, and robust content moderation strategies to tackle the challenges posed by NSFW chatbots efficiently.
