Instagram is raising its safety bar for teenagers in Malaysia with fresh updates to its Teen Accounts. Starting now, users under 18 will automatically find themselves in a new 13+ content setting that curtails exposure to potentially unsuitable material. Notably, this setting can’t be altered without parental consent, ensuring a safer browsing experience tailored to younger users.
"Teens may occasionally encounter suggestive content or strong language similar to such films on Instagram, but we’re going to keep doing all we can to keep those instances as rare as possible," Meta emphasized in a statement released today. This move aligns Instagram's content guidelines more closely with what’s typical for PG-13 movies, a move that Meta believes enhances online safety for younger users.
The update also rolls out a stricter "Limited Content" feature, giving parents a tighter grip on what their kids can see. Clara Koh, Meta’s director of public policy for central Southeast Asia and ASEAN, highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader commitment to protect young users online. She stressed that feedback from parents played a crucial role in shaping these new settings.
“In addition to our longstanding policies, which already hide or prohibit the recommendation of sexually suggestive content, graphic or disturbing images, and adult content like tobacco or alcohol sales from teens, our updated policies will now go even further,” Koh stated.
Meta is no stranger to rigorous content filtering. The company already has measures to block or hide adult content from teens, but the recent updates take it even further. Instagram will now also hide or not recommend posts that feature strong language, risky stunts, or content that could promote harmful behaviors, including posts showcasing marijuana paraphernalia.
By aligning these safeguards with familiar movie-rating standards, Meta ensures that teens not only stay safe but also engage with content that’s appropriate for their age. This proactive stance underscores Meta’s ongoing mission to create a secure digital landscape for its youngest users.
