Meta has taken a significant step to enhance the online safety of teens in India by expanding the updated Teen Accounts experience on Instagram. A key feature of this rollout is the revised 13+ content setting, which automatically ensures that teens under 18 are shown age-appropriate content. This setting is designed to align with what is generally permitted in movies rated for ages 13 and above, offering a safer browsing environment for young users.
The initiative requires that teens under 18 cannot change these settings without parental consent, providing an additional layer of oversight. In a phased approach, these updates are being introduced gradually across India and are expected to become more widely available in the coming months.
Instagram's updated system continues to limit access to content of a sexual, graphic, or adult nature. But it's not just about what teens are seeing – Meta is also restricting who can interact with them. Teen accounts won't be able to connect with profiles flagged for sharing inappropriate content, and such accounts will be prevented from reaching out to teens.
“The safety of our young users is a top priority, and these updates ensure a more secure experience,” a Meta spokesperson explained.
Further, searches for sensitive terms, even those misspelled, will be blocked to prevent exposure to mature or harmful content such as discussions around alcohol or gore. This is part of Meta's effort to create a safer platform using advanced technology.
