Director-producer duo Andy and Barbara Muschietti were both taken aback and thankful when HBO gave the green light to the shocking opening scene of It: Welcome to Derry. The scene, described by Andy as a "kick in the balls," sets the tone for the series, illustrating that no one is safe in this chilling world. The Muschiettis shared their thoughts during a NYCC roundtable, highlighting the exhilarating yet jarring start to the show, which takes place in the 1962-set prequel.
“We didn't know that we would get away with it, but we had the full support of HBO and everything that was graphic horror and body horror. We're very lucky,” Barbara explained.
The series, set to debut on HBO Max on October 26, dives into the origins of the Losers Club and features the haunting presence of Pennywise. The pilot episode doesn't shy away from graphic content, capturing viewers with its intense and visually unsettling scenes. The opening ten minutes are labeled as some of the most terrifying moments aired on television, echoing the unnerving style of the Muschiettis' previous It films.
Co-showrunner and head writer Jason Fuchs crafted this nightmare-inducing scene with a metaphorical twist, while Brad Caleb Kane emphasized its role in setting the series' overarching theme. “It's what you see on the surface, but you scratch a little deeper, you scratch the surface and see the rot underneath," Kane remarked.
Fans of the It universe will recognize Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise. The cast also features Jovan Adepo as Leroy Hanlon, Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann, and Taylour Paige as Charlotte Hanlon, among others. The series delves into the Hanlon family's history, tying into the broader It narrative. Even Dick Hallorann from The Shining makes an appearance, bringing a unique crossover element to the storyline.
It: Welcome to Derry promises to be a thrilling addition to the Stephen King universe, offering both new and returning fans a deeper dive into the dread-filled town of Derry, Maine.
