Italy is the latest country to mandate age verification for accessing adult websites, aligning itself with the UK, France, and several US states. The Italian communications authority, AGCOM, announced that from November 12, users will need to verify their age before accessing such content. This measure aims to protect privacy and enhance data security. However, as seen in other countries, there's already a surge in interest around VPNs, suggesting that users might be looking for ways to bypass these restrictions.
The new system, according to the European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA), offers a 'double-anonymity' feature designed to safeguard personal data. The process involves a certified third-party verifying user identity and issuing a secure token. This token is used to access adult sites, ensuring that the third party and the websites remain unaware of what content is being accessed or who the user is. While this system promises improved security compared to others, it centralizes user data, raising concerns about potential vulnerabilities.
"The intent to protect privacy with this new system is commendable, but it inevitably sparks curiosity and concern amongst users," notes a digital security expert.
Given that each verification requires repeating the process, the risk of data breaches could increase, prompting skepticism about its long-term effectiveness.
Initially, the age verification will be required for about 50 sites, but AGCOM suggests this list will grow, potentially including more services deemed inappropriate for minors. This extension could mirror the UK's broader application of similar rules, a move that has faced criticism. Users are already exploring ways to circumvent these checks, as evidenced by a notable uptick in Google searches for VPNs and 'November 12' – the date of implementation.
The urgency to circumvent these measures could lead users to unreliable VPN services, ironically putting their data at more risk. This situation underscores the importance of opting for reputable VPN providers like NordVPN and Proton VPN to truly safeguard user information.
