In a heartfelt address on Sunday night, former President Joe Biden described the current political climate under President Donald Trump as "dark days," urging Americans to "get back up" and rally behind late-night TV hosts. Biden, emphasizing their role as champions of free speech, praised these hosts as brave moral exemplars in his speech.
“Since its founding, America served as a beacon for the most powerful idea ever in government in the history of the world,” said the former president. “The idea is stronger than any army. We’re more powerful than any dictator.”
Speaking in Boston, Biden made his comments after being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute. This marked his first public appearance since completing radiation therapy for an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
During his speech, Biden underscored the importance of supporting a presidency with limited power, a functioning congress, and an independent judiciary. He expressed concerns over the federal government's record-length shutdown and warned against the overreach of Trump's administration.
Biden didn't mince words, expressing fear and criticism toward Trump's practices. As he shifted focus to late-night hosts, he spotlighted them as defenders of free speech who face dwindling audiences and shifting dynamics in Hollywood.
"Friends, I can’t sugar coat any of this. These are dark days," Biden stated, adding a hopeful note that the nation would "find our true compass again" and emerge stronger and wiser. He urged Americans to support comedians and late-night hosts in their fight for free speech, noting their careers are on the line.
Concluding his speech with a call to action, Biden encouraged the public to "get back up." His words resonate amid a backdrop of political tension and highlight the cultural significance of late-night hosts in today's America.
