It's been a remarkable year for Kathy Bates on the small screen, with CBS's Matlock thriving and gearing up for its second season in 2025. However, the success of Matlock hasn’t diminished the sting of an earlier career setback. Bates recently spoke out about the abrupt cancellation of Harry's Law years ago, sharing her raw feelings about the show's untimely end.
Harry's Law, a legal dramedy crafted by David E. Kelley of Boston Legal fame, was a ratings hit for NBC but was cancelled after just two seasons from 2011 to 2012. Despite Bates earning Emmy nominations for her role as Harriet "Harry" Korn, and boasting a talented cast like Nate Corddry and Brittany Snow, the show's fate seemed sealed. In a candid moment while promoting American Horror Story: Coven, Bates didn't hold back: "I think they treated us like shit. They kicked us to the curb. They disrespected us. They disrespected our seven to 11 million viewers a week. And I think they’re getting what they deserve."
Reflecting on the NBC decision years later, Bates can now afford a chuckle. Her reaction when asked by Variety about it couldn’t have been more candid. "They said, 'We can't monetize on old people.' And I felt like, 'Fuck you!' Success is the best revenge," Bates said, laughing.
“They said, 'We can't monetize on old people.' And I felt like, 'Fuck you!' Success is the best revenge.”
Her success with Matlock indeed speaks volumes. By anchoring the series around her character, Bates has proven that older actors can lead hit shows. Her efforts were acknowledged with a Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Drama, and a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama in 2025, making her the oldest nominee in that category at 77.
While Bates’ time on Harry's Law is behind her, Matlock is clearly thriving. CBS shows no signs of pulling the plug anytime soon. The drama will stick to its Thursday 9 p.m. ET slot, setting the stage for another gripping season. Fans can catch the Season 2 premiere with a special Sunday broadcast on October 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET, followed by its regular schedule.
For those eager to catch up or relive the journey, the entire first season of Matlock is available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription. As Bates continues to pave the way, it's clear her star power is far from dimmed.
