Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson has kicked off her season with a bang, but it's her physique that's causing a stir. Despite her impressive start, fans have been buzzing about her apparent weight gain. Hodgkinson, fresh from smashing the 800m indoor world record at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée EDF, clocked in at a stunning 1:54.87. She also snagged a victory in the 400m at the 4J Studios Scottish Athletics National Indoor Combined Events Championships, making her a hot favorite for the upcoming World Indoor Championships.
Jenny Meadows, Hodgkinson's coach, took to her X (formerly Twitter) profile to address the chatter head-on. She highlighted the misleading nature of online discussions about Keely's physique, stressing that changes in her body should be viewed in the context of her performance needs and health history. According to Meadows, the slight weight increase was a necessary return to a healthier baseline, not a drastic change.
“Seen dubious comments that Keely put 6kg body mass on. Context, in Paris ‘24 she lost 3kg so increase only 3kg to prior. At lower mass she got injured. Let’s applaud a young woman who puts health first, is growing into her adult body & doesn’t get fixated on unstable numbers,” Jenny Meadows shared.
Meadows urged fans to focus on Keely's long-term well-being, strength, and resilience, particularly as she continues to mature physically. The coach emphasized the importance of development and recovery, steering the conversation away from speculative figures.
After the Paris Olympic Games, Hodgkinson faced an injury setback that benched her for the entire 2025 indoor season. However, she bounced back, claiming a bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, trailing behind Lilian Odira and her training partner, Georgia Hunter Bell. With her sights now set on future championships, Hodgkinson's journey is one to watch, focusing not just on records, but on maintaining a balanced approach to health and performance.
