Los Angeles County has filed a groundbreaking lawsuit against Roblox, a popular online gaming platform, over allegations that it exposes children to sexual content, exploitation, and online predators. The lawsuit claims that Roblox's current moderation and age-verification systems are inadequate, potentially making children vulnerable to predatory behavior.
The complaint, lodged by the LA County Counsel’s office, argues that Roblox has failed in its responsibility to create a safe environment for its young users. While the company markets itself as a child-friendly platform, the lawsuit suggests otherwise, highlighting the risks posed by its current design. "Roblox has a responsibility to keep kids safe, but instead, it has allowed its platform to become a place where children can be exposed to grooming and exploitation," said Hilda Solis, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
Roblox, which touts a massive user base of 144 million daily active users—40% of whom are under 13—has long faced scrutiny over its content moderation. The platform allows users to create, share, and interact in various games and experiences, using custom avatars. Despite its popularity, the company has been criticized for not doing enough to shield its young audience from harmful content.
In response to the allegations, Roblox firmly denies the claims, maintaining that safety is a core part of its platform's design. A company spokesperson told AFP, "We have advanced safeguards that monitor our platform for harmful content and communications, and users cannot send or receive images via chat, avoiding one of the most prevalent opportunities for misuse seen elsewhere online."
“There is no finish line when it comes to protecting kids and, while no system can be perfect, our commitment to safety never ends.”
The lawsuit is part of a broader push to hold tech companies accountable for their roles in safeguarding young users online. This comes at a time when other social media giants such as Facebook are also facing legal challenges for allegedly targeting young teenagers with addictive algorithms.
The controversy has caught international attention. Recently, Australia's government expressed concerns over child safety on the platform, seeking an urgent meeting with Roblox to discuss the matter. Additionally, a 2024 report by Hindenburg Research harshly criticized the platform, labeling it an "X-rated pedophile hellscape" due to the alleged exposure of children to grooming and pornographic content.
As the legal battle unfolds, Roblox insists on its proactive measures to address violations swiftly and collaborate with law enforcement when necessary. With the lawsuit now underway, the outcome could set significant precedents for how online platforms manage and protect young users in the digital age.
