Wyatt James Anderson, a 22-year-old from Logan, is facing the music after being charged with downloading child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Anderson was apprehended last fall when local authorities found illicit content on his mobile device. Now, two cases are coming to a close as Anderson has accepted a plea deal.
In Logan's 1st District Court on February 9, Anderson changed his plea to guilty on three amended charges of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, a third-degree felony, along with lewdness involving a child, a class A misdemeanor. In return, seven other charges were dismissed, according to court records.
The chain of events began on September 26 with a search warrant executed by a Logan City police officer to extract data from Anderson's phone. A forensic analysis carried out three days later uncovered disturbing content, leading to the issuance of a second warrant. This revealed 20 additional files of child sexual abuse material.
“It was chilling to see the extent of the material discovered on a single device,” said a source familiar with the investigation.
Officers arrested Anderson at his apartment on October 4. When informed of the charges, he attempted self-harm with scissors. Quick action by police officers ensured he received medical attention promptly.
In the course of his police interview post-arrest, Anderson divulged a flawed method of "verification" he used while accessing adult content. He confessed to using platforms like Reddit to find images that appeared to feature underage girls, performing reverse searches to verify their age. However, he admitted that this approach had failed multiple times.
Anderson remains detained in Cache County Jail without bail as he awaits sentencing on March 23. He could potentially face a prison term exceeding five years, marking a pivotal turn in this deeply troubling case.
