Louis Theroux, the fearless documentarian celebrated for his deep dives into the fringes of society, is back with a gripping new project, Inside the Manosphere. Set to premiere on Netflix on March 11, this documentary marks Theroux's first collaboration with the streaming giant and stands as a cornerstone in his over 30-year career that began on Michael Moore’s TV Nation.
Known for tackling the unconventional and often unsettling, Theroux has previously turned his lens on groups like the Westboro Baptist Church and ultra-nationalists in the West Bank. Now, he ventures into the intricate and controversial world of the "manosphere." This vast online realm includes influencers ranging from popular podcasters to fitness gurus and cryptocurrency enthusiasts.
In a candid interview, Theroux described the manosphere as “the final boss battle” in his journey of documentary-making. He pointed out its ties to themes of misogyny, racism, and adult content commodification. "I've been circling this subject for years," Theroux shared, highlighting the challenge of engaging with individuals who often see content creation as a competitive sport.
“It combines cultlike groupings and various taboo areas of life that I’ve spent my TV work documenting in different forms,” Theroux explained.
The manosphere has caught considerable attention for its sway, particularly among young men. According to Theroux, many influencers in this space use toxic messaging as bait to attract viewers, which then leads to sales pitches for dubious products, including forex schemes and questionable online courses. He criticizes these platforms as “a rather cynical grift.”
The documentary features interactions with notable figures like British influencer HSTikkyTokky, American star Sneako, and podcast hosts Myron Gaines and Justin Waller. Through these conversations, Theroux seeks to illuminate a subculture with an alarming reach that shapes the views of millions of young men globally. "This has scale and reach beyond anything I've looked at of comparable extremeness," Theroux remarked.
While attempting to include controversial manosphere figure Andrew Tate, known for his legal issues, Theroux faced resistance. Despite allegations against him, which Tate denies, he dismissed Theroux's relevance, citing greater media interest in himself through Google Trends.
As Inside the Manosphere approaches its release, all eyes are on how Theroux will navigate this complex and challenging subject. His goal is not only to document but to dissect the dangerous narratives within this emerging digital culture, highlighting its impact on young men and the concerning ideologies thriving online.
