The New York Giants didn’t have the offensive start they hoped for in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders. Wide receiver Malik Nabers found himself at the center of attention after an intense moment with head coach Brian Daboll on the sidelines. Nabers later explained that the heated exchange was merely a motivational effort.
“I said I was going to speak up when it was time for me to speak up. I was just trying to get the guys going, trying to get everything going. I felt like we were lacking out there. The energy wasn't right, so I took it upon myself to try to boost people up,” Nabers shared about the incident.
Fans noticed Nabers' seemingly frustrated demeanor, sparking further speculation about his mood. Days later, he clarified the situation, as reported by ESPN's Jordan Raanan. Nabers humorously attributed his sideline look to having 'NBF, natural bitch face,' emphasizing it wasn’t about lack of targets since he had 12, the highest on the team.
“It had nothing to do with lack of targets. Had 12 in game,” Nabers noted.
Nabers ended the game with five receptions for 71 yards, indicating that despite the drama, his performance remained solid. However, the Giants need to pair such efforts with actual wins.
In Week 1, the Giants struggled offensively, managing only 157 passing yards and 74 rushing yards, and failing to score a touchdown. This marks the third consecutive season opener without a TD – a streak not seen since the Detroit Lions from 1940 to 1942, per OptaSTATS.
Quarterback Russell Wilson completed 17 of his 37 passes for 168 yards, leading to questions about his starting position. However, coach Daboll confirmed Wilson will remain the starter as they prepare to take on the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants are hopeful for an offensive turnaround. If improvements don't materialize, changes might be inevitable, with Jaxson Dart potentially stepping into the QB1 role.
