Marlon Wayans is embracing his bold comedic style once again with the latest installment of the Scary Movie franchise. Alongside his talented siblings Shawn, Keenen Ivory, and Craig Wayans, Marlon is bringing his unique take on contemporary culture to the big screen, likening it to "bare-knuckle boxing." The 53-year-old actor isn't shying away from today's controversies, choosing instead to weave them into his narrative with humor.
“We're not punks. We're not afraid – we Wayans are not afraid to go there. But is it worth the goodness of your project to just be offensive?”
The new movie bravely touches on a myriad of modern issues, ranging from #MeToo to OnlyFans and even ICE raids. Despite the edgy content, Marlon insists their approach is less about causing offense and more about delivering a punch of laughter. "This is bare-knuckle boxing alright, but with kids gloves on," he told Entertainment Weekly. "For us, it's not about the blood. We're not trying to get blood, we're just trying to hit you in the face and get you one of those Fred Flintstone notches."
Marlon and Shawn have developed a keen eye for what works in their films, carefully crafting each scene to avoid unnecessary divisiveness. Marlon explained their unique method: "When we were doing test screenings, if it's everybody's favourite scene and least favourite scene, that scene I learned has to go, because it's divisive. I don't want any divisive scenes. Everything that was divisive, I took out of the movie."
The Wayans brothers know their audience well, having enjoyed immense success since the franchise's inception in 2000. Marlon believes now is the perfect time for Scary Movie 6, saying, "This is coming at a time where the world needs a laugh. And look, we’re not here to save the world. We’re here to remind people what it’s like to laugh and feel good."
The Wayans brothers' comedic genius can be traced back to their mother, Elvira. Marlon credits her with shaping their humor: "One of the funniest people that ever walked this earth was Elvira Wayans. She was brilliant. Her point of view of the poverty we were in, of religion, of my father – everything was a joke to my mother, and she was fearless."
As audiences eagerly await the next chapter in the Scary Movie saga, Marlon Wayans is set to deliver another hit that blends humor with reality, proving once again that he's not afraid to tackle the tough stuff with a laugh.
