Prime Video is turning heads with its growing lineup of Young Adult (YA) content, pivoting from its usual blockbusters like The Boys and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Now, Argentinian author Mercedes Ron is at the center of this whirlwind with her phenomenal series, Culpables, which has taken the platform by storm. Ron, a Wattpad sensation, boasts over 86 million reads, and her series has evolved into a Prime Video franchise, drawing comparisons to After and A través de mi ventana.
Mark your calendars for October 16th as the final film in the Culpables trilogy hits the screens, wrapping up the tale of Noah (Nicole Wallace) and Nick (Gabriel Guevara). The series isn't just a hit – it's a record-breaker. The teaser for this closing chapter smashed viewing records, amassing over 163 million views. On TikTok, Culpables has racked up an astonishing 2.7 billion views, and the books themselves have sold more than 3 million copies globally.
Mercedes Ron isn't stopping with Culpables. While at a Prime Video Originals retreat in Ibiza, she revealed her ambitious plans: 10 upcoming book-to-screen adaptations with Prime Video, dubbed "The House of Ron." This suite of adaptations includes titles like Culpa Mia, Culpa Tuya, Culpa Nuestra, and many more. Already, three films have debuted, with more on the way, including Dimelo en Secreto and Dimelo Bajito.
“I think it’s a safe place where you can disconnect and watch something enjoyable,” Ron shared at the retreat, reflecting on why YA resonates with viewers of all ages.
Ron emphasizes the universal appeal of YA, offering a safe space for young viewers to experience first loves and for older ones to relive them. It fosters community, much like the dedicated fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty. As she notes, "When you’re young, you need to be part of something and share it with people your age."
For Mercedes Ron, her success with Prime Video is a platform for more Latina voices in the industry. As one of the first to forge such a deal with a major streaming service, she paves the way for others. "There’s a lot of talent out there," Ron asserts, confident that more Latina authors will follow her lead, creating romantic films and stories that audiences crave.
And if you're a fan eager for more, stay tuned for Maxton Hall Season 2, dropping November 7th. With its own unique mix of romance and drama, it promises to be another YA hit on Prime Video.
