NEW BERLIN, Ill. (WAND) – The serene town of New Berlin is grappling with disturbing news as a school district employee faces grave accusations of child sexual abuse. The former employee's alleged misconduct has prompted swift action from local authorities and the school district.
On April 15, 2025, the New Berlin School District brought to light allegations against the employee, reporting an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The employee, who served the district from May 2021 until April 2025, was placed on administrative leave on April 11. The Board of Education terminated the employee's contract 10 days later, following due process.
Sangamon County Sheriff's Office detectives moved quickly to investigate the claims, culminating in the issuance of an arrest warrant for 43-year-old Lindsey Prather. Prather, a resident of New Berlin, is now facing five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse along with a charge relating to child sexual abuse material.
On March 19, Prather was apprehended and is currently held at the Sangamon County Jail, where she awaits a detention hearing. The rapid progression of the investigation underscores the seriousness of the charges.
"Our mission remains to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment for all of our students, and the safety of our children is of paramount importance," the New Berlin School District stated. "The allegations against Ms. Prather allege conduct that violates the core principles and values of our District."
The New Berlin School District has publicly reaffirmed its commitment to student safety, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a secure environment for learning. In their statement to WAND News, the district expressed determination to support those impacted by the incident.
"We will continue to work tirelessly to support and protect our children," the district added, urging anyone with concerns to reach out to administration. This commitment highlights the district's proactive stance in not only addressing the current allegations but also preventing future incidents.
