Tensions are running high at a Montreal high school after a police officer accidentally flashed nude images to Grade 10 students during a talk on sexual assault and consent. The mishap occurred at St. Thomas High School, located in the West Island, where a Detective-Sergeant from the Sexual Assault Unit was joined by two Crown prosecutors for the educational session.
In an unfortunate turn of events, explicit images tied to a sexual assault investigation were briefly shown when the presenters switched from a video back to their PowerPoint slides. The school principal quickly informed parents via email, confirming that the images, which depicted nude genitalia, were removed from the screen within moments. An apology followed from the officer involved.
While the images were quickly taken down, the incident has stirred concern among parents. Elizabeth-May Massarelli, whose child was present, expressed her unease. "It wasn’t random pornography on the internet. It was literally victims of sexual assault that they were witnessing," she noted, adding her worry about the loss of trust in the police.
“If you’re a victim of any kind of crime, you want to know the police is on your side and that they’re going to keep your information private.”
In response, the Montreal police have acknowledged the "unprecedented" nature of the mistake, promising to take action to prevent future incidents. This includes outfitting officers with dedicated laptops for presentations and ensuring files are stored securely.
The Lester B. Pearson School Board is keeping a close eye on the situation, with spokesperson Darren Becker stating, "Support services are there," as they monitor for any ongoing impact on students. Meanwhile, Massarelli stresses the importance of providing students with the necessary follow-up and expert support to rebuild trust.
Montreal police have confirmed plans to collaborate with the school board to ensure future presentations are handled correctly, emphasizing that while human error occurred, steps are being taken to address the issue comprehensively.
