Fans of ChatGPT will have to wait a bit longer for the much-anticipated adult mode, as OpenAI has announced a delay until the first quarter of 2026. The decision to push back the release comes as the company works to fine-tune its age prediction technology, ensuring only verified adults can access the feature.
Originally slated for a late 2025 launch, the adult mode aims to bring a new level of expressiveness to ChatGPT. OpenAI envisions this feature as a way for those over 18 to engage with a less restricted version of the popular AI, potentially including content like erotica. "We're focused on creating a space that respects both users' desires and safety," explained Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive of applications, during a recent briefing.
OpenAI is currently putting its age verification system to the test in select countries. The system's goal is to differentiate between adults and teenagers accurately, deploying extra safeguards when someone under 18 is detected. The move underscores a broader industry trend towards tightening online safety measures and complying with new regulations on age verification.
“Our cautious approach is about ensuring that underage users are not exposed to content that's inappropriate for them,” said an OpenAI representative.
Even with the delay, OpenAI has continued to make strides with its AI, recently launching GPT-5.2. This latest model excels with faster responses and improved reasoning but doesn't yet include the adult mode features. The tech community and users alike are curious about how the adult mode will eventually integrate into GPT's evolving capabilities.
While OpenAI hasn't shared an exact launch date, they promise the adult mode will roll out once it meets stringent safety standards, marking a significant step in AI's development and user interaction potential.
