OpenAI is gearing up to roll out age verification for its popular ChatGPT platform in December, allowing adult users to explore a richer array of topics, including adult content. This decision follows a drop in user activity after stricter content restrictions were introduced back in August. With these upcoming changes, OpenAI aims to enhance user experience while ensuring age-appropriate content access.
Previously, OpenAI implemented parental controls and curbed discussions on sensitive topics, like suicide and adult themes, for younger users. The upcoming age verification feature will let adult users engage in a broader scope of discussions, including erotic content. Before these restrictions, reports suggested that some users formed romantic bonds with the AI.
Although specifics on the verification process are under wraps, CEO Sam Altman announced its expected December rollout. It remains to be seen if the verification will be automated or manual, but similar strategies are par for the course on platforms like YouTube and Google, which also require age verification. By easing restrictions for verified adults, OpenAI aims to boost its user retention, targeting an increase from the 35 million paid subscribers as of July. Their long-term goal? Elevate that number to 8.6% of users by 2030, hitting around 220 million subscribers.
“We’re excited to open up more content to verified adults while maintaining a safe environment for all users,” said a representative from OpenAI.
ChatGPT remains accessible to free users, offering model experiments, image generation, and web browsing. Paid subscribers enjoy additional perks like increased limits and new tools. However, the allure of unrestricted conversations has led OpenAI to contemplate verified adult access.
This move is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to boost user satisfaction and engagement by letting adults delve into more diverse topics. The company hopes to win back users who felt constrained under the previous content limits, possibly drawing in those who turned to other platforms for more open dialogue.
While the timeline for the new age verification system remains broad, OpenAI’s planned December launch might coincide with their annual festive announcements. Last year, OpenAI delighted users with daily feature reveals during its "12 Days of OpenAI" event leading up to Christmas. A similar unveiling this year could include the new age verification and expanded content access, marking a transformative phase for user interaction on the platform.
As OpenAI nears this transition, their focus will likely be on making the verification process smooth and effective. The changes underscore OpenAI’s promise to balance user engagement with responsible content management, fostering a safer environment for all users to explore.
