OpenAI is poised to launch a text-only adult mode for ChatGPT, despite significant internal pushback, according to the Wall Street Journal. The feature will allow users to engage in chats with adult themes but will refrain from generating erotic audio, images, or videos. OpenAI emphasizes that the content will be considered "smut rather than pornography."
ChatGPT, launched by OpenAI in November 2022 under the leadership of CEO Sam Altman, has traditionally steered clear of erotic content. However, recent discussions within the company have explored allowing certain types of NSFW interactions. Despite a lack of immediate comment from OpenAI, the move is already generating buzz and controversy in tech circles.
“Allowing more user freedom for adults while ensuring the safety of minors is our dual focus,” Altman said in a post on X last October.
The rollout of adult mode had been delayed as OpenAI prioritized other advancements, such as enhancing intelligence and personalization features. Initially set for a March release, the feature’s launch was postponed to ensure it was properly implemented. The internal debate took a dramatic turn when Ryan Beiermeister, a product policy executive who opposed the adult mode, was dismissed from OpenAI in January.
While OpenAI claims the termination was unrelated to her stance, citing sexual discrimination allegations instead, Beiermeister has refuted these claims, labeling them "absolutely false." Concerns within OpenAI include fears about inadequate safeguards against child-exploitation content and the potential for minors to access adult-themed chats.
OpenAI has faced scrutiny not just internally but also from an advisory council of experts in psychology and cognitive neuroscience. During a January meeting, these advisers warned about the risks of minors bypassing age restrictions and the emotional dependence some users might develop on the platform's adult mode.
One adviser ominously dubbed the potential for the platform to become a "sexy suicide coach," pointing to instances where ChatGPT was implicated in user suicides. The Wall Street Journal highlighted that OpenAI is actively working on refining its age-prediction technology, which currently misclassifies minors as adults around 12% of the time.
As OpenAI treads into the realm of AI-generated sexual material, it joins a controversial trend already under scrutiny. Recent issues with Elon Musk's Grok and Meta's AI raise questions about the impact and ethical considerations of such features in AI systems.
