OpenAI Introduces Group Chat Feature for ChatGPT Users

OpenAI is shaking things up by introducing group chats to ChatGPT, offering a fresh way for users to connect and collaborate with friends, family, or colleagues in real-time. This feature comes hot on the heels of last month's update that brought more personality and adult content options to ChatGPT, signaling a broader push to make the AI chatbot an essential part of shared digital experiences.

How It Works

Emphasizing ease and privacy, the group chat functionality allows users to add between one and twenty participants. Simply tap the people icon in the upper right corner or share a link to get started. ChatGPT will jump in contextually – only when tapped or when direct input is necessary. Responses are driven by the advanced GPT-5.1 Auto model, which smartly selects the best AI mode based on the user's plan.

“Whether you’re organizing a group dinner or drafting an outline with coworkers, ChatGPT can help,” OpenAI highlighted in their announcement.

Currently, the feature is being rolled out to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users across Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. Unfortunately, users in Canada, the U.S., and other regions will have to wait for further updates on availability.

Exciting Possibilities

The new group chat feature opens a plethora of collaborative opportunities. From planning weekend getaways and coordinating dinner parties to spending an afternoon brainstorming for school or work projects, ChatGPT becomes a virtual team player. Users can seamlessly share articles, jot down notes, pose questions, and let ChatGPT take charge of summarizing key details to ensure everyone’s informed.

Privacy First Approach

In line with OpenAI's commitment to privacy, these group chats remain distinct from personal chats in ChatGPT's interface, with their own clearly marked sidebar section. Under-18 users automatically experience reduced exposure to mature content, while parents have the option to turn off group chats entirely.

This pilot feature follows OpenAI's significant $38 billion USD agreement with Amazon to host ChatGPT and other AI tools on Amazon's cloud platform. Coupled with recent launches like ChatGPT Atlas and the Sora image generation app, OpenAI seems to be setting the stage for more groundbreaking AI-powered collaborations.

The innovation comes amid news that Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT into its devices to enhance AI features, though this partnership is currently entangled in legal issues with Elon Musk’s xAI. As OpenAI continues to expand ChatGPT’s horizons, the potential for AI-driven interactive and social experiences looks brighter than ever.
