OpenAI has put the brakes on rolling out its debated 'adult mode' for ChatGPT, a feature aimed at enabling steamy text conversations with users. This delay stems from internal pushback and advisor warnings about the mental health and child safety risks linked to the feature. The intended launch marked a significant shift from OpenAI's firm stance against sexually explicit content.
Advisory voices within OpenAI have been vocal, citing potential mental health hazards. The 'adult mode' could inadvertently foster unhealthy emotional ties with ChatGPT or even expose minors to unsuitable content. During a key January meeting, members of the advisory council, which includes experts in psychology and cognitive neuroscience, highlighted the grave risk of creating what one member termed a "sexy suicide coach."
"It's crucial to weigh the psychological impact such interactions could have on users," noted a council member.
The launch of 'adult mode,' initially planned for the first quarter, is on hold due to complex technical issues and competing priorities within the company. One major technical hurdle is the system's age-prediction accuracy, which incorrectly classified minors as adults 12% of the time, posing a serious risk of unauthorized access to explicit chats.
When the 'adult mode' eventually debuts, it will facilitate erotic text exchanges but steer clear of generating explicit images, voice, or video content. Despite the concerns around AI-driven erotica, including the risk of addictive behavior and emotional dependency on AI, OpenAI is committed to introducing adult-themed text chats. As an OpenAI spokesperson clarified, the content aims to be "smut rather than pornography," with ongoing efforts to train models to avoid fostering exclusive emotional bonds with users.
