Pakistan continues to make headlines as a leading country in international searches for adult content, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). While the nation isn’t at the forefront when it comes to viewing, Director General Dr. Muqarram Ali shared these insights during a cybersecurity seminar held by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI).
Dr. Muqarram Ali detailed the strides made by the PTA in curbing access to indecent content, highlighting the blocking of 1.3 million sites. "After witnessing the steps being taken by PTA, such as massive blocking of indecent sites, a tangible effect can definitely be seen," he noted, emphasizing the drop in Pakistan's ranking for site access.
“PTA blocks all immoral and unethical content available online, but does not proactively initiate any move to wipe out sites on its own accord,” stated Dr. Ali.
Abdullah Kadir, PTA Chairman, addressed the challenges faced due to conflicting court rulings and emphasized that the PTA’s actions are directed by government orders. "We in PTA do not have the initiative to block websites on our own accord," Kadir stated. He also mentioned the international attention drawn by the temporary banning of Wikipedia, leading to the formation of an inter-ministerial committee to address such issues.
The PTA’s task is further complicated by legal contradictions, with some court orders demanding platform bans and others opposing such actions. Kadir emphasized that the PTA adheres to a structured system in navigating these legal waters. While these measures have influenced Pakistan’s global standing in terms of site access, the country still leads in search frequency, underscoring the ongoing challenge of regulating online content.
